When you think about Mexican food, you might think of food that is delicious but heavy. However, not all Mexican food is fried or covered in cheese. There are a number of choices at your favorite Mexican restaurant that give you all of the flavor of great Mexican food and a healthy boost as well.

Lighter Choices

By keeping some basic principles in mind, you can find a number of healthy choices on Mexican menus. Dishes that are grilled, soft corn tortillas and black beans instead of refried are all healthier selections. The flavorful salsas that accompany Mexican food mean that you don’t really miss the fat. Among the healthiest dishes are fajitas and ceviche.

Watch Your Portion Size

Too much of anything and you’ll gain weight, so just because you ordered grilled chicken doesn’t mean you should eat three platefuls of it. This works both ways though. It also means that you are allowed to indulge in a few bites of high-calorie foods such as guacamole or cheese dip.

Fresh Vegetables and Fruits

If you keep the five-a-day rule in mind when ordering and try to order dishes that fulfill two of your fruit or vegetable requirements, you may have a healthier meal.

Moderation

Finally, it is important to remember that a little indulgence is good too. Many healthy eaters find that if they make the healthiest choices about 80 or 90 percent of the time, then they can allow themselves treats at other times. Unless you have medical reasons for avoiding certain foods, be sure to allow room in your healthy diet for those treats.
